TRM Technical Risk Management

ComDust Management

The management of combustible dust in coal handling facilities requires more than just a “silver bullet” from an equipment vendor.  It requires a complete program.  TRM is a single point source for the critical dimensions of a Combustible Dust Management Program.

ENGINEERED EVALUATION.  TRM completes a Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) of the affected areas.  Using this PHA, TRM facilitates the development of a maximum acceptable dust level for each subject area.  The physical arrangement of dust gauges (similar to rain gauges) is located on drawings and a monthly reporting structure is developed and reviewed with the plant team.  Gauges are placed in the field immediately following the Clean-2-Zero visit.

CLEAN-2-ZERO. No program can be implemented with any effectiveness if the basis of measurement and analysis does not start with a clean area under evaluation.  TRM Combustible Dust Removal (CDR) Technicians remove ALL the dust in the affected areas.  By bringing the area to a zero state of dust accumulation, the rate of dust accumulation, along with the sources of the fugitive dust release, are more easily identified.

INSPECT AND REPORT.  TRM’s Combustible Dust Engineers return to the site monthly to inspect and report on the amount of dust present in the dust gauges.  These findings are presented in a one page summary utilizing a red/yellow/green action matrix.  Management has a clear picture of where dust needs to be removed from the plant on a monthly basis and can take action.

RECLEAN-2-ZERO.  When the action matrix calls for a dust removal, the same TRM crew that completed the initial Clean2Zero returns for the follow up work.  They have their site specific training completed and are familiar with your equipment, operation and personnel.  They are prepared to complete the follow-up removal as efficiently as possible.

REDUCING FUTURE FUGITIVE RELEASES.  Combustible dust removal is inevitable.  Regardless of the any vendor claims, fugitive dust will escape your system.  Upgrading your systems and your process will increase the duration between dust removals.  Properly configured, maintained and operated systems may only need an annual dust removal service.  TRM provides several services to help clients extend durations between removals.
